You do it. I do it. We all do it all day long. It keeps us alive and it nourishes us. Breathing is the key to leading a fulfilling and healthy life, especially online. It is the most natural and effective way of dealing with stress and distraction.
How does it work? Professor Neema Moraveji in his upcoming interview with us explains:
What about our emotions? What is the link there? This is what yoga master TKV Desikachar said in his book Heart of Yoga:
“The quality of our breath is extremely important because it expresses our inner feelings. If we are in pain it shows in our breathing. If we are distracted we lose control of our breathing. The breath is the link between the inner and outer body.”
So our breathing influences our nervous system, our emotions and our focus.
If you’re breathing quickly and shallowly, you’re going to feel nervous and stressed. On the other hand, if your breathing is smooth, deep and slow, then you will feel calm and focused.
So, right now pay attention to how you are breathing. Take a few moments to breathe deeply.
Do this throughout the day. Even set a few reminders in your calendar to help you to remember to do it.
It seems the first step on the path to digital mindfulness is simple – just breathe.
